2v3 possibilities

While dota is immensely a flexible game with much possibilities, it does have some limitations that is difficult to break.  For one, trilanes are very powerful against a dual lane (3v2).  It's difficult to find two-hero combinations that can effectively handle a trilane.  This is why a suicide lane exist.  It also helps that trilanes weaken other lanes, so that double dual lane plus a suicide works out pretty well (eg. 113 vs 221).

The practice of a suicide lane against trilane has become such a standard that it's almost considered stupid not to do it.  That being said, I recently encountered a lane comp that sort of "broke" this for me, and it got me thinking a bit more about the 2v3 matchup and beyond.

Here's the thing, no one really has a complete matchup knowledge of all the available 2v3 or 3v3 matchups.  It's not very explored because how many times do you see veno/ck/lesh go up against ud/bh/pudge?  Most players would shake their head thinking that the triple melee has no chance.  But fact of the matter is, the triple melee is quite competitive against the said opponents.  And it has legs too, because that lane, if it wins, it shuts down the opposing team's carry, and the gold will come eventually thanks to track gold.  

Yeah, the given melee trilane may not fit so well with the current standard formula of 12345 (farm priority concept).  But farmrate is all relative.  If the enemy team is suffering farm, and you aren't, then you are okay.  It may not be 100% optimal, but you are ahead and winning that important lane (tri vs. tri, challenge lane).  Besides, you have track gold insurance.  Mind you, I've seen this get played out in a game once (or, something like it.  It was pretty close).  And yeah, the triple melee somehow won.

Maybe it was because of a little misplay by the veno/ck/lesh.  Maybe the triple melee just played it better.  Either way (or more), it doesn't matter.  The point is that these matchups are not as clear cut as some would believe.  And that, even though it may not fit so perfectly well into current farm priority concept, it doesn't mean it lacks potential. 

I went up against a ud/wisp as am/thd/rubick today.  I was the Antimage, and I played pretty badly.  I'd have to play the matchup more to be sure, but I think it's pretty difficult gaining a clear edge against ud/wisp.  That sounds ridiculous, but it really was not as easy as it seemed.   Every time our supports come near me to give presence in lane, we'd get decayed.  When they're not in lane giving presence, Undying's getting cs and I'm getting harrassed by Wisp.  And because we were all int/agi heroes, each decay was something fierce.  Definitely didn't make it easy to commit when we constantly had around 400hp.  The commits were often fruitless and I was not getting the cs I wanted.  I even went for prioritizing on manabreak in attempt of ooming him during lift and icypath.  It just was not enough.  Shit, I even died once in the lane due to my own stupidity.

The team was convinced that it was somehow all my fault.  I suppose the death didn't help.  I mean, I'm not proud of how I played that's for sure (I rarely am).  But the point is that I don't think the matchup was as black and white as our teammates would have me believe.  Or perhaps it was and I'm just retardedly clueless, I don't know.  At least I didn't think it was so simple.

One thing's for sure, Undying seems very good at handling these multi-hero situations because of decay.  Shit, I don't even think Wisp was even the optimal lane partner for that 2v3 situation.  Although, tether did help, he'd just bolt outta there at times.

Anyway.  Something to think about.  Maybe 2v3 lane is doable afterall.  This opens doors ... possibly.  Maybe.  Or maybe not, what do I know?  What do you know?  Fuck, I don't know.  Dota's too hard, help.
